Designed in Czechoslovakia by Aero Vodochody, the L-39 first flew on 4 November 1968 and entered service with Romanian Air Force in 1982 as an advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft.

The aircraft has an all metal construction, is powered by a single Russian Progress AI-25 TL turbofan engine. The aircraft features two wing tip tanks and a strong landing gear allowing landings on grass runways and features four under wing hard points for missiles and other armament.

Two VS-1 BRI ejection seats allow the crew to leave the aircraft at 0 feet altitude and a minimum speed of 80 knots. Formally of the Ukrainian Air Force, it arrived in the United States in 2002 and was completely restored and demilitarized as per United States government regulations prior to FAA Certification. This process is required for all “former” military aircraft and took almost two years to complete.
